It’s that time of year when we select a cause that resonates with us and help make a difference through our annual event, Shine for a Cause. It is our opportunity to support women throughout the month of March, in honor of International Women’s Day. This event is your chance to support local organizations that encourage the growth and strength of women. It truly is one of our favorite events of the year. We love getting to know the organization from the inside out. We try our best to meet staff and volunteers and one of us will visit the organization and connect with those who benefit from the cause. This year, we became acquainted with Fairy Goodmothers, dedicated to promoting confidence and self-esteem in Central Ohio high school girls. We are so excited to share their story and truly make a difference.
Who is Fairy Goodmothers?
Fairy Goodmothers create an annual pop-up shop in March open to ALL high school youth in Ohio called Cinderella’s Closet. They provide formal dresses and accessories to those who lack the means to purchase these items, enabling them to attend prom and feel special during this exciting time. All the dresses come from people just like us who have unwanted clothing and accessories. So, before you get rid of that old dress, think about how grateful these girls would be to have the opportunity to wear it. All the student needs to be a part of the shopping experience is a valid student ID. It is not necessary for the student to meet a financial requirement. Each girl gets a personal shopper to take them around the store to select their perfect dress. As we know, looking good is such a huge part of feeling good. The personal shopper helps them understand what looks good for each individual’s shape and style. This is the first time many of these girls have had an opportunity like this.
How to Get Involved in the Cause with A&L!
We will collect dresses and accessories in the store throughout March to donate to Cinderella’s Closet.
For every item donated you will receive 20% off your in-stock jewelry purchase and 10% off your vintage jewelry purchase.
Fairy Goodmothers accepts donations of gently used prom-appropriate dresses, shoes, evening handbags, jewelry and wraps. We will only accept items of good quality.
An interview with the President of Fairy Goodmothers.
Jenna Homan, current president of Fairy Goodmothers, sat with me to discuss how she got involved with the group and how others can get involved. Jenna had a good friend in the organization and on their board and began by accompanying her to a few events. It wasn’t before she felt the desire to be a greater part. She has now been on the board of Fairy Goodmothers for 5 years. When discussing the most pressing needs of the organization she mentioned they really need volunteers to assist with outreach in the high schools. A volunteer goes out to the schools and connects with guidance counselors, so they are able to spread the word about the pop-up shop and how girls can connect with the organization before prom. They also need personal shoppers to assist at Cinderella’s Closet as well as volunteers to assist with the set up and tear down. Last years pop up was at Beck Street School. It’s important to have a large space that is centralized and easily accessible for students from all over the central Ohio. They are also always looking for potential locations for future pop ups. If you would like to get more involved or are interested in volunteering please go to the volunteer link on their website.
