Art at Argo’s – Kathy Bates, Chasing Beauty

In the heart of Chillicothe, Ohio, local artist, Kathy Bates, is creating inspiring paintings for her stunning new exhibit, “Chasing Beauty.” This collection, on display at Argo & Lehne Jewelers from October 5, 2024, through January 4, 2025, is a celebration of light, shadow, and the vivid colors that make up the world around us.

Kathy Bates, originally from the east side of Columbus, is drawn to the interplay of light and shadow, a passion that shines through in her oil paintings. Her work is characterized by a deep saturation of color and a joyful exploration of her three favorite subjects: landscapes, animals, and still life, particularly flowers. Each piece is a testament to her belief that art should be accessible, bringing joy and hope to those who encounter it.

Despite being self-taught, Kathy’s work reflects a sophisticated understanding of how light can transform ordinary scenes into extraordinary moments. Her paintings capture the fleeting beauty of a sunset, the curious gaze of an animal, or the delicate petals of a flower, inviting viewers to see the world through her eyes—full of color, life, and endless possibility.

Kathy’s journey into art began later in life, but we have no doubt that her passion and dedication will quickly make her a notable figure in the local art community. We are thrilled to be among the first to showcase her work and introduce her to our Art at Argo’s followers. Her artist statement beautifully captures the essence of her work and her personal connection to her art:

Artist Statement – Chasing Beauty

“I am a small animal veterinarian who has become completely obsessed with painting. It was during a very low point in my life, that a vague notion came to me that I needed to try something new. So at the age of 42, on a complete whim, I picked up a paintbrush for the very first time. I was instantly hooked.

My life as a veterinarian was full of science, logic, and deduction. Daily I would see joy and birth, trauma and illness, and sadly a great deal of cruelty and loss as well. Art was a mystical and fascinating escape into a world of beauty, stillness, and color. I could turn off my thinking brain and lose myself into the realm of light and shadow.

Now retired, I can paint almost daily. I want my art to be a reflection of how I want to see the world. I want to see tidbits of joy and color even in the mundane items in my household. I want to see and find comfort in the natural progression of the seasons, unaffected by the conflicts and arguments of humanity. I want to honor our fellow living creatures, from the pets on our sofas, to the wildlife sharing our backyards and national parks. I am chasing beauty.”

Kathy’s art provides a space where viewers can find solace, joy, and a renewed appreciation for the world’s simple beauties. Her work not only showcases her talent but also serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to discover a new passion.
