Art at Argo’s: John Wilson

Back in the summer of 2016, we exhibited the beautiful paintings of Frances McEwan Monfort, the sister and protege of local artist Michael McEwan. Since we loved her work so much, it only made sense that we would look for more of Michael’s students to display here at Argo’s–which brings us to the wonderful paintings of John Wilson. John’s impressionistic landscapes are truly charming and bring warmth to our store.

About John WilsonJohn Wilson - Art at Argo's

John was born in Big Stone Gap, a small coal mining town in Southwest Virginia.  He received his doctorate in cancer epidemiology from Roswell Park Cancer Center and the State University of New York at Buffalo, NY.  His professional career has taken him from New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Washington DC, Georgia, West Virginia, Tennessee and finally to Ohio, where he worked at the James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio State University.

John’s love and appreciation of drawing and painting began at a very young age, ultimately receiving his bachelor’s degree in art from East Tennessee State University.  His world of art collided with science and medicine when he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 26.  As a cancer survivor, he focused his art training on medical illustration.  While attending graduate school and working in the department of medical illustration at Roswell Park Cancer Center, he was introduced to the field of epidemiology.  From that point forward he dedicated himself to applying the science of epidemiology to helping individuals diagnosed with cancer.

His career has taken him many places but one place, Cape Cod, has always held a special meaning for him.  For more than 40 years he and his family have spent summers in Chatham, MA on Cape Cod.  Much of his painting inspiration for his current exhibition at A&L, “Summers at the Sea” comes from time spent exploring the Cape.

A busy career left little time for painting, but in the past few years his artistic roots were renewed and revitalized by studying with the nationally renowned artist Michael McEwan.  It is through Michael’s mastery and knowledge of painting, particularly landscape painting, that John is now painting full-time.
