Ninety-five years later, his legacy endures through his grandson, Robert Argo & his wife, Glenda. Robert is third generation, succeeding James A. Argo’s late sons, William Alexander Argo & J. Richard Argo, and J. Richard’s sons, Richard W. & James A. Argo. Now, Robert & Glenda prepare their youngest son, William S. Argo to serve the next generation of customers. Will currently acts as bench jeweler, photographer, engraver, salesman, and advisor.
Purchasing century-old Harrington & Co. in 1959, Argo & Lehne adopted its location on 84 North High, merging inventories, customers & staff as well as locations. Later, A&L moved to 20 S. Third Street on the corner of Broad & Third opposite the State House, remaining there for another decade. For over a decade, Argo & Lehne also maintained a presence in Bexley at 2376 E. Main Street near Capital University. In 1959, Kingsdale Center built out a corner space for A&L where it remained until moving to its current location at 3100 Tremont Road in 2002.
To what does a family-owned business that’s weathered the Great Depression, a world war and many changes over time attribute their longevity?
Robert Argo credits success to staying a step ahead, always anticipating your customers’ desires and above all having loyal customers whom you treat like family. This has been a philosophy with each generation of owners at Argo & Lehne.
The best way to learn about Argo & Lehne is from a customer. Stories are endless of how the iconic full-service jewelry store has become an integral part of celebrations in local homes from baby’s first spoon to engagement rings and every occasion thereafter. “Our customers are for life,” states Robert Argo. Another way to learn about the business is by simply stepping foot into the store. The showroom is an elegant space with a sense of history. You may first notice the gorgeous crystal chandelier that once hung at the Virginia Hotel in downtown Columbus or perhaps the rich burled wood of the showcases.
Another immediate observation is the artwork on the walls with new local artists quarterly and the sculptures displayed in the recessed wall nooks by internationally known sculptor Alfred Tibor. It only makes sense that a company focused on art, jewelry and history is also the destination for one-of-a-kind pieces either custom-made, hand-selected contemporary or bespoke vintage jewelry. Nearly half of the store is stocked with high-quality vintage jewelry including vintage bridal. This is a store for those who love individuality and quality. You won’t find your neighbor wearing the same piece you purchased here.
A&L’s staff has the knowledge and experience to meet every aspect of your needs – an American Gem Society Certified Gemologist Appraiser, an AGS Accredited Gem Laboratory, in house shop, savvy buyer, attentive sales force, meticulous & efficient back office. One of few remaining full-service jewelers, A&L offers traditional giftware, baby goods, appraisals, personalized engraving, cleaning, consignment, estate disposition, precious metal buying, special order, custom design, and much more.
